Penicylina i jej odkrywcy
W roku 1945 Ernst Boris Chain, wraz z Alexandrem Flemingiem i Howardem Florey’em, otrzymał Nagrodę Nobla z dziedziny fizjologii lub medycyny. Gdyby nie praca trójki naukowców, prawdopodobnie do dziś wiele chorób zakaźnych niosłoby za sobą ryzyko śmierci. Jednak dzięki odkryciu zastosowania penicyliny i wprowadzeniu jej na rynek farmaceutyczny wiele chorób bakteryjnych jest dziś nieszkodliwych. Z racji przypadającej dziś 34. rocznicy śmierci E.B. Chain’a przypominamy historię odkrycia pierwszego antybiotyku.

Polski innowacyjny lek na łuszczycę nagrodzony

Epimutacje – nowy sposób lekooporności mikroorganizmów
O tym, że mikroorganizmy wykształciły zdolność nabywania oporności na leki wiadomo już od dawna. Do tej pory sądzono jednak, że wytworzenie niewrażliwości na substancje terapeutyczne wymaga trwałych zmian w materiale genetycznym, a więc mutacji. Teraz okazuje się, że drobnoustroje mogą tymczasowo wyciszać geny stanowiące cel terapii. Takie odwracalne zmiany nazwano epimutacjami.

Renaturacja białek rekombinowanych? Polscy specjaliści robią to skutecznie
W tym roku mijają 32 lata odkąd pierwsze rekombinowane białko, powstałe dzięki inżynierii genetycznej zostało zatwierdzone jako lek i dopuszczone do leczenia u ludzi. Ludzka insulina rekombinowana, bo o niej mowa, zapoczątkowała nową erę w medycynie.
