Epigenetyczny test w raku prostaty
Guz stercza to trzeci co do częstości występowania wśród mężczyzn typ nowotworu. Corocznie, głównie w krajach wysoce rozwiniętych, odnotowuje on wzrost ilości zachorowań. Szybkie testy diagnostyczne umożliwiają wykrycie oraz zapewnienie odpowiedniego leczenia pacjentom w jak najkrótszym czasie. Epigenetyczny test analizujący zmiany ekspresji trzech marketów molekularnych: APC, GSTP1 oraz RASSF1 stanowi nowe podejście diagnostyczne dla istniejącego już testu oznaczania PSA. Zmniejsza on również konieczność wielokrotnych biopsji.

Narodowe Centrum badań i Rozwoju uruchamia w 2014 roku dwa duże programy finansowania, skierowane do przedsiębiorców oraz współpracujących z nimi naukowców (konsorcja naukowe). Oba programy obejmują obszary związane z naukami przyrodniczymi i medycyną, a efektem projektów powinno być wprowadzenie na rynek konkretnego efektu prac badawczych i wysiłków wdrożeniowych. Całkowity planowany koszt budżetu obu projektów to około 720 mln złotych.

Ruszyły prace nad szczepionką na raka
Na Duńskim Uniwersytecie Technicznym w Kopenhadze od miesiąca trwa projekt mający na celu przyspieszenie rozwoju szczepionek przeciwko nowotworowi. Naukowcy po raz pierwszy w historii wyeliminowali utajony HIV-1 z organizmu gospodarza. Opracowana technika pozwala na skuteczne pozbycie się wirusa z komórek. Czasopismo Science postanowiło wprowadzić dodatkowy etap kontroli danych naukowych przed publikacją. Etapem tym ma być analiza opracowania statystycznego prezentowanych wyników i wyciągniętych na ich podstawie wniosków. Zmiana jest odpowiedzią na nasilający się problem braku powtarzalności wyników w niezależnych zespołach badawczych. Genetyczny rozrusznik serca?
Wstrzykiwanie genu bezpośrednio do serca zastępuje rozrusznik? Wydaje się irracjonalne, jednak naukowcy z Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute opracowali małoinwazyjne procedury wszczepiania genu warunkującego utrzymanie stałego bicia serca. Tylko 8,2% ma znaczenie?
Naukowcy z Oxford University informują, że tylko 8,2% ludzkiego DNA jest w rzeczywistości funkcjonalne. Wartość ta zdecydowanie odbiega od ogłoszonej w 2012 roku przez naukowców zaangażowanych w projekt ENCODE (Encyclopedia of DNA Elements). Wówczas stwierdzono, że aż 80% naszego genomu pełni jakąś biochemiczną funkcję. Nowe doniesienia nie sugerują jednak obecności ponad 90% „śmieciowego” DNA w ludzkim organizmie.

W krajach wysokorozwiniętych choroba Alzheimera stanowi główną przyczynę demencji. Dotyczy ona 30 mln ludzi na świecie. Na 29 lipca wyznaczono datę publikacji najnowszego rankingu cytowań poszczególnych czasopism naukowych. Przy tej okazji warto zastanowić się, jakie jest znaczenie takich wskaźników i czy rzeczywiście współczynnik impact factor jest miarą jakości artykułów? W 2013 Noblista Randy Schekman zaprotestował na łamach the Guardian przeciwko zdominowaniu procesu publikacji artykułów naukowych przez zaledwie kilka czasopism uważanych za “elitarne”.
