A remote spatial communication system based on 3D image modelling and augmented reality

The subject of this offer is a remote spatial communication system based on 3D image modelling and augmented reality, enabling the creation of a shared, dynamic 3D model of the working environment and its use for remote collaboration, expert consultations and training. A remote consultant can analyse the space from a perspective of their choosing and provide the operator with spatial guidance and annotations displayed directly in their field of view. A key element of the solution is the synchronisation of the image from 3D cameras, the spatial model and augmented reality devices within a common reference frame, which facilitates clearer communication than is possible with conventional 2D image transmission.

Advantages:

  • A more comprehensive view of the situation – the expert works with a dynamic 3D model of the environment, rather than solely with an image from a single camera.
  • More precise communication – instructions and annotations can be directly linked to specific locations and objects in the environment.
  • Free choice of perspective – the remote consultant chooses their own vantage point and is not limited to the operator’s perspective.
  • Potential reduction in the risk of misinterpretation – a shared 3D space can reduce the ambiguity in communication characteristic of 2D images.
  • Access to an expert without their physical presence – the technology enables remote specialist support regardless of location.
  • New training opportunities – the solution can be used in training, simulations and medical education.
  • Potential cost savings – remote collaboration may reduce the costs of business travel, transporting experts and organising face-to-face training.

Potential applications:

  • Remote support for surgical procedures – consultation with an expert located at another facility or site.
  • Medical teleconsultations – providing specialist guidance requiring precise spatial reference.
  • Surgical and medical training – learning procedures in an environment utilising a spatial model of a real-world setting.
  • Medical simulation centres – realistic exercises and analysis of team behaviour in a 3D environment.
  • Remote expert and diagnostic support – potential application in procedures where an expert must understand the spatial positioning of equipment, people or objects.
  • The technology also has the potential to be adapted for remote equipment maintenance, industrial applications, and immersive education and training.

The technology has reached Technology Readiness Level 5 – TRL 5.

Further development involves:

  • pilot tests in real-world environments, including operating theatres or simulation centres,
  • further functional and usability validation,
  • preparation for certification requirements specific to clinical applications.

The system has been designed for phased implementation and can function both as a complete solution and as a module compatible with visualisation and augmented reality platforms.

The solution on offer is the subject of a patent application. The CITTRU Technology Transfer Centre is seeking partners interested in pilot projects, licensing, joint development and the implementation of the technology in medical, training and telemedicine solutions.
