Laboratory of Single-Molecule Biophysics https://bit.ly/3SZlc9l at the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IIMCB), Warsaw headed by Dr. Ewelina Małecka is inviting applications for a PhD Student.

Description of the project area: Antibiotic resistance in bacteria, including Acinetobacter baumannii, represents a critical challenge in global healthcare. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial RNA metabolism is essential for developing novel therapeutic strategies. This project focuses on characterizing the protein interactions involving RNase E, a key enzyme in RNA processing and degradation in A. baumannii. RNase E in E. coli forms a multicomponent complex, known as the RNA degradosome. By identifying RNase E interacting proteins through affinity purification and mass spectrometry, this project aims to elucidate the composition and functional dynamics of the RNase E complex, offering potential targets for antibacterial drug development.

Job description: The PhD student will utilize techniques such as affinity purification and mass spectrometry to identify components of the RNA degradosome in Acinetobacter baumannii. Additionally, the student will employ biochemical methods and single-molecule microscopy to investigate the functional roles of these proteins in RNA metabolism. This position integrates microbiology, molecular biology, and biochemistry, and seeks a candidate with a strong interest in RNA biology and antibiotic resistance.

Laboratory interest:  The Laboratory of Single-Molecule Biophysics is dedicated to investigating the regulation of gene expression in bacteria through in vivo and in vitro methods, such as cutting-edge single-molecule TIRF microscopy. Another research branch within the laboratory is focused on exploring host-bacteriophage relationships.

Requirements for the candidate:

  1. MSc degree in biology, biotechnology, or a related field.
  2. Solid understanding of the principles of molecular biology and biochemistry.
  3. Hands-on experience in laboratory work.
  4. Previous exposure to working with RNA, protein purification, or microscopy techniques will be advantageous.
  5. Is able to effectively communicate complex information in English, both orally and in writing.
  6. Exhibits excellent interpersonal skills, initiative, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a high-performing team.

We offer:

  1. Contract under civil law until the commencement of the Doctoral School Warsaw-4-PhD (expected in February 2025).
  2. Competitive salary:
  • Remuneration of 4800 PLN net/month until the mid-term evaluation.
  • Subsequently, an increase to approximately 5300 PLN net/month following the mid-term evaluation.
  1. Role exclusively dedicated to research with no teaching responsibilities.
  2. Discounted individual medical care package and inclusion in the MultiSport program (upon enrollment in the Doctoral School Warsaw-4-PhD).
  3. Participation in courses, scientific training, support from peers, and academic mentoring
  4. Administrative and organizational assistance provided by proficient English-speaking staff.

Deadline for applications is 30.09.2024. Job starting date is 1.11.2024 or later.
